A mother of two teenage boys who have autism has won a national blogging award for her website that offers help to parents seeking help and advice with special needs education.

Tania Tirraoro, who lives in Upper Hale, started the Special Needs Jungle site, in 2008, after she secured a statement of Special Educational Needs for her younger son, Giorgio, who’s now almost 13.

Since then she has helped hundreds of parents who have emailed with questions about their own children and has published a practical guide to statementing. Tania is also co-chair of Family Voice Surrey, the parent-carer forum for the county.

At an awards ceremony in London on Friday, attended by more than 500 parent bloggers, Special Needs Jungle was named best blog for ‘change’ in the BritMums “Brilliance in Blogging” awards.

The judges said, “The contents are well focused and relevant. This blog is a useful communication tool for parents who face such difficult circumstances.”

Tania said, “I was really surprised, though obviously, delighted to have won, as my blog is quite a niche. I hope to be able to use the increased attention to highlight important causes such as vulnerable children in care, as well as continuing to work for effective SEN reform”

Tania’s two sons, who have Asperger Syndrome, both attend a specialist school As a result of the help they receive, her eldest son, Luca will be able to take part next year in an expedition to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Luca, 14, was also this week named Player of the Year for all the senior squads at Crookham Rovers FC, where he is goalkeeper for the Under 14s.

Family Voice Surrey will be taking part in two Surrey County Council information events for the Special Educational Needs pathfinder.
